"I Don’t Like Mondays" was a UK number one single for four weeks during July and August 1979. Written by Bob Geldof and performed by The Boomtown Rats, it was the band’s second number one single.
The song was inspired by 16 old american teenager Brenda Ann Spencer who carried out a shooting spree from her home in San Diego, California on Monday, January 29, 1979. During the shooting, she killed two people and injured nine others at Cleveland Elementary School, which was located across the street from her home. When asked why she committed the shooting Spencer replied, “I just did it for the fun of it. I don’t like Mondays. This livens up the day..”
She was sentenced to prison for 25 years to life. Spencer has been denied parole four times, she will not be eligible for parole until 2019.
